Chicken Patiala Recipe

Chicken Patiala recipe is one of the best dishes of Punjab. The gravy can be done in different ways using a plethora of ingredients. Better known as Murg Patiala, this famous Punjabi dish is easy to prepare and great to taste. Chicken Patiala recipe can be prepared using the following ingredients.


1. Chicken – 500 gms
2. Poppy seeds – 3 tbsp.
3. Melon seeds – 3 tbsp.
4. Ghee or oil – 4 tbsp.
5. Cashews – 5 to 6
6. Onion – 1 (paste)
7. Two chopped tomatoes
8. ½ cup yogurt
9. Garam masala – 1 tbsp.
10. Black pepper – 1 tbsp.
11. Red chili powder – 2 tbsp.
12. ¼ cup single cream
13. Raisins – 8 to 9
14. Blanched and silvered Almonds – 6
15. Salt to taste

Method for preparing chicken Patiala recipe:

Make a paste out of cashews, melon and poppy seeds and keep it aside. Heat oil/ghee in a heavy pan and add the onion paste. Fry the onion paste until it becomes light brown. Add the tomatoes and keep frying the mixture until you see the oil starts to separate. Add the paste that you already made and stir for about three minutes. Add whisked yogurt one tbsp at a time so that it blends finely without curdling.

Add the spices and chicken pieces with one cup of water and stir well. Cover the pan and cook on low heat for about 20 minutes. Simmer the flame and add in cream, raisins and almonds and mix well. Cook for another 5 minutes until the gravy thickens. If you want to reduce the gravy further, cook for another five minutes without covering the lid. Serve the gravy with cream and sprinkle some almonds and raisins on the top. This delicious chicken Patiala recipe goes well with naan, chapatti, and parathas. Chicken Patiala recipe can also be served with hot rice.
