Gujrati Dal Dhokli

It is an all-time favourite dish across generations in Gujrati families. Dal Dhokli is wholesome dish packed with proteins coming from the lentils (dal) and fiber coming from Dhokli’s.

Steps

For the Dhokli’s:

1
Done
Combine all the ingredients and prepare a semi-soft dough.
2
Done
Cover it with a wet cloth and let it rest for 20 minutes.
3
Done
Divide the dough into 7 equal portions. Roll out thin chapatis and cut them into diamond shape. Keep them aside.

For the Dal:

1
Done
Ensure that the dal is boiled well. Using the back of a ladle, mash the dal slightly until it becomes little mushy.
2
Done
Heat the ghee in a kadai. Once it is hot, add cumin seeds and let them crackle.
3
Done
Now, add curry leaves and green chilies. Fry them a little on a medium flame.
4
Done
Add ginger and garlic paste and saute it on a medium flame until the raw flame goes away.
5
Done
It is now time to add finely chopped tomatoes, red chili powder, coriander seeds powder, salt. Let them cook until ghee separates from the masala.
6
Done
Now, add the dal and jaggery. Mix it well. Add a little water if the dal is thick. This is because it will thicken after adding the dhoklis.
7
Done
Let the dal boil for 5-7 minutes on medium to slow flame.

How to proceed with the Dhoklis:

1
Done
Add the Dhoklis one-by-one once the dal is cooked and let it boil on slow flame for about 7 minutes. Keep stiring it in between, otherwise the dhoklis will stick to the bottom.
2
Done
The dhoklis should have cooked by now.
3
Done
Switch off the flame and add lemon juice, coriander leaves.
4
Done
Serve immediately.
