Ingredients

For the Dhoklis:

1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1/2 tsp red chilli powder

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1/4 tsp carom seeds

1/2 tsp semi-crushed cumin seeds

salt to taste

For the Dal:
-
1 cup Tur Dalsoaked and boiled with ¼ tsp turmeric powder, 5 kokum pieces and little salt
-
1 medium sized tomato finely chopped
-
1 tsp ginger paste
-
2 green chilies slit
-
6-8 fresh curry leaves
-
1/2 tsp garlic paste
-
3 tbsp Jaggerycan be adjusted as per taste

1/2 tsp red chili powder
-
1 tsp coriander seeds powder
-
1 tbsp ghee
-
3/4 tsp Cumin seeds
-
1 tsp lemon juice
-
salt to taste
-
Finely chopped coriander leaves for garnishing
Directions
It is an all-time favourite dish across generations in Gujrati families. Dal Dhokli is wholesome dish packed with proteins coming from the lentils (dal) and fiber coming from Dhokli’s.
Steps
For the Dhokli’s: |

Combine all the ingredients and prepare a semi-soft dough.

Cover it with a wet cloth and let it rest for 20 minutes.

Divide the dough into 7 equal portions. Roll out thin chapatis and cut them into diamond shape. Keep them aside.

For the Dal: |

Ensure that the dal is boiled well. Using the back of a ladle, mash the dal slightly until it becomes little mushy.

Heat the ghee in a kadai. Once it is hot, add cumin seeds and let them crackle.

Now, add curry leaves and green chilies. Fry them a little on a medium flame.

Add ginger and garlic paste and saute it on a medium flame until the raw flame goes away.

It is now time to add finely chopped tomatoes, red chili powder, coriander seeds powder, salt. Let them cook until ghee separates from the masala.

Now, add the dal and jaggery. Mix it well. Add a little water if the dal is thick. This is because it will thicken after adding the dhoklis.

Let the dal boil for 5-7 minutes on medium to slow flame.

How to proceed with the Dhoklis: |

Add the Dhoklis one-by-one once the dal is cooked and let it boil on slow flame for about 7 minutes. Keep stiring it in between, otherwise the dhoklis will stick to the bottom.

The dhoklis should have cooked by now.

Switch off the flame and add lemon juice, coriander leaves.

Serve immediately.
